The degree programs of the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering provide the educational foundation for success in all walks of life whether or not one's career path includes employment as a professional engineer, work in a field outside of engineering, or pursuit of further education.

Program Educational Objectives

Graduates of aerospace and mechanical engineering are expected to attain the following educational objectives within a few years of graduation:

  • Work as professionals within engineering or a related area in both small- and large-scale businesses;
  • Pursue further education through graduate school or professional development courses; and
  • Become leaders within their chosen profession whether it be industry, academia, or service.

Student Outcomes

Upon completion of either the BSAE or the BSME programs, students will have acquired:

  1. an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering
  2. an ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data
  3. an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability
  4. an ability to function on multidisciplinary teams
  5. an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems
  6. an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility
  7. an ability to communicate effectively
  8. the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context
  9. a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning
  10. a knowledge of contemporary issues
  11. an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.

Degree Programs

The Department offers degree programs leading to the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees in Aerospace Engineering and in Mechanical Engineering. The undergraduate programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org. The Master of Science (M.S.), Engineer, and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programs are offered at the graduate level. These degree programs are described in detail in the USC Catalogue. Details of graduate degrees and procedures are also summarized in The Graduate Student Handbook.
