Langdon Wins 2005 Somiya Award

Prof. Terry Langdon from the Aerospace & Mechanical Engineering Department in the USC Viterbi School of Engineering wins the IUMRS's Somiya Award for International Collaboration in 2005.

2005 Somiya Award for International Collaboration

The AME Department’s own Professor Terence G. Langdon along with Professor Zenji Horita of Kyushu University, Japan, have been selected as the recipients of the 2005 Somiya Award for International Collaboration. The Somiya Award is given annually by the International Union of Materials Research Societies (IUMRS) for the most significant research on materials conducted by an interactive group whose members are drawn from at least two continents. The criteria for the award include the publication of high quality research which is well recognized by the international materials community and the development of a collaborative program having a

major impact on technology or society. Langdon and Horita were cited for their collaboration on the application of severe plastic deformation in the processing and properties of ultrafine-grained and nanostructured metals. This on-going collaboration was initiated in 1993 and has led to date to more than 200 papers in the scientific literature. Currently, Langdon and Horita are ranked as #2 and #6 for the most citations in the field of Materials Science for papers published over the 10-year period from 1995 to 2005. The award will be presented at a special ceremony to be held on July 5, 2005, as part of the IUMRS International Conference on Advanced Materials in Singapore.
